The "subject" is a unified concept and therefore the result of "interpre¬tation." Nietzsche often stresses that it is a specifically linguistic figurative habit of immemorial standing: "that when it is thought [wenn gedacht wird] there must be something `that thinks' is simply a formulation of our grammatical custom that adds a doer to every deed."
